Eight days of relentless high-mountain wind across Europe’s largest arctic plateau. 3 to 11 April 2027.
Hardangervidda in April is legendary. While the lowlands begin to melt, the high plateau at 1,200 meters elevation is locked in full winter: frozen lakes spanning tens of kilometers, boundless rolling white slopes, zero trees, and constant Arctic wind. Because snow friction is near zero compared to water, you don’t fight to plane: you glide silently at 50 km/h with featherlight bar pressure, climbing mountains and descending frozen valleys on clean wind.
Our plan is pure freedom: drive daily along Route 7 to chase wherever the wind is best. When the eastern valley is calm, the western pass is firing at 20 knots. Last spring, our crew logged an incredible 100 km backcountry day across the plateau toward the edge of the Hardangerjøkulen glacier, coming back to wood fires, saunas, and great meals together.

How the Trip Comes Together
Everything is arranged to make logistics seamless so we can spend maximum hours on snow:
- Basecamps & Flexibility: Two authentic mountain cabins booked for the week: Mormorstølen in Ustaoset (with electric sauna) and Hegghytta in Haugastøl (two minutes from the plateau). Both Airbnbs have 100% free cancellation, with The Upwind Cabin (House C) ready on standby if we decide to consolidate.
- Getting There: Fly to Oslo Gardermoen (OSL), pick up keyless Getaround rental cars (fleet of 4 to 5 cars for 13 riders; strictly max 3 riders per car for gear space), and enjoy a scenic 3.5 hour mountain drive along Route 7.
- Kite Quivers: Because snow friction is so low, kite sizes are smaller than water (mostly 5 to 11 m² single-skin foils or light tubes).
- Gear Hire: No snowkite gear yet? Rent full foil quivers from Kitesurfing.no (12m Soul + 8m Explore) or full packages from Upwind Snowkiting at Fagerheim, or join a progression clinic with local kite schools.

We have two distinct lodges situated along Route 7. Mormorstølen is our spacious sauna lodge with private bedrooms, while Hegghytta is our trailhead cabin two minutes from the spots. Flights & Mountain Route
Flights to Oslo Gardermoen (OSL), followed by a scenic 3.5 hour mountain drive along Route 7.
Riders arrive from Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Zurich. We coordinate arrival windows so cars can head up to our cabins in Ustaoset and Haugastøl together. If you plan to bring ski bags on your flight, review sports luggage options against on-site ski rentals and check the packing list.

Car Fleet Planning & The 3-Person Capacity Rule
Snowkiting in sub-zero Arctic conditions requires significantly more high-volume gear than a typical road trip. While standard rental cars (estates/station wagons or mid-size SUVs) advertise 5 passenger seatbelts, realistic equipment volume strictly limits passenger capacity to a maximum of 3 riders per car.

Filter for "Skiboks" (Roof Box)
When searching cars in Oslo on Getaround Norway, look for station wagons (stasjonvogn) or SUVs with an installed skiboks (ski roof box). Moving skis and poles to the roof frees up 100% of the interior trunk for luggage and kite bags.
Soft Duffel Bags Only (No Hard Shells)
Rigid clamshell suitcases cannot compress and create massive dead space in car trunks. All riders should pack in flexible duffels (e.g. Patagonia Black Hole, North Face Base Camp) that conform into trunk corners around boot bags.
Road Logistics & Navigation
The Geilo Pit Stop: Supermarkets & Vinmonopolet
Before ascending the high pass to Ustaoset and Haugastøl, every car should stop in Geilo Sentrum (30 km / 25 minutes before Haugastøl). Geilo is the main mountain service town in the valley with full-scale supermarkets that are significantly cheaper and far better stocked than small plateau outposts.
- Kiwi Geilo & Spar Geilo: Huge selections of fresh groceries, oats, pasta, Norwegian salmon, skyr, bulk coffee, and firewood logs.
- Vinmonopolet Geilo: The only state liquor store in the entire mountain region for wine, craft beer, and spirits. Opening hours: Mon–Fri 10:00–18:00, Sat 10:00–16:00, closed Sundays! If landing on Saturday afternoon, ensure early cars hit Geilo before 16:00 or stock up beforehand.
- Joker Ustaoset: Local mountain grocer and 24/7 automated fuel station directly across from Mormorstølen (House A) for mid-week milk, eggs, bread, and diesel/petrol top-ups.
Kite Size & Wind Guide
Hardpack snow and sub-zero air require completely different kite sizing than summer water.
Snowkiting on hardpack has near-zero friction. You do not sink when speed drops, and dense cold air delivers significantly more lift per square meter. A 75 kg rider who rides a 12 m² tube kite on water typically rides an 8 m² single-skin foil or 6 m² tube on hard mountain snow. If you don't own these smaller sizes, you can reserve a full package through local equipment rentals.

Operated by Lenka Simkova and Jan Simek's expedition team (VAKE Long Distance World Champions). We already have an active direct connection with Lenka (she offered us House C: The Upwind Cabin and verified full weekly rental packages). Upwind operates directly from Fagerheim Fjellstugu on Route 7 and meets riders at the Ustaoset gas station right beside House A and House C.
3. Vindskolen.no / Fluid.no (Weekend Foundation Clinics at Haugastøl)
Vindskolen has over a decade of teaching experience on snow and water and partners with Fluid.no. They run regular courses out of Haugastøl Turistsenter with indoor Friday evening theory and intensive practical sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
4. Haugastøl 1000 MOH & Bjørn Kaupang (Backcountry Coaching for Experienced Riders)
For the 8 experienced riders (Berend, Dienke, Pieter, Finn, Sebastian, Stef, Enno, and Cees), traditional beginner lessons are unnecessary. However, Hardangervidda's Arctic terrain has unique features: 100 km expanse, wind gradient shifts, road convoy protocols, and navigating toward the Hardangerjøkulen glacier edge. Haugastøl 1000 MOH provides expert mountain briefings and spot consulting.
5. Skikite.com (Finse 1222 Glacier Mountain Course)
Located at Finse station (1,222m elevation), Skikite runs multi-day alpine courses in a high-glacier wilderness environment. However, because Finse is accessible only by train with zero road connection, it is ranked #5 due to logistical separation from our cabin base.
The 2-Track Daily Expedition Rhythm
- 08:30 · Morning Sync: Both cabins check the live Haugastøl webcams, Statens Vegvesen convoy reports, and wind directions over coffee.
- 09:30 · Seamless Departures: House B (Hegghytta) riders drop Floor, Merel, Roel, Carola, and Hanne 650 meters down the road at Haugastøl Turistsenter (or drive 15 min to Fagerheim with Upwind). The experienced cars head straight to the morning wind hotspot along Route 7.
- 13:00 · Midday Rendezvous: Both groups link up at Fagerheim Fjellstugu or the Lake Ørteren car park for warm soup, hot tea from thermoses, and cheering on the learners' first board runs.
- 16:30 · Evening Recovery & Sauna: Back to the cabins for hot showers, drying gear, lighting the fire, and gathering at Mormorstølen (House A) for the electric sauna and group dinner!

Hardangervidda sits at 60.5° North latitude and 1,200 meters elevation. While Tromsø and Lofoten (68°–69°N) are famous for midwinter auroras, the high plateau holds an extraordinary geographic advantage: it is one of the highest, darkest wilderness vantage points in mainland Europe. The 2:15 AM Sauna Run & The Neon Sky
It is Tuesday night at Mormorstølen. Outside, it is –8°C and dead quiet over the frozen expanse of Ustevatnet. Inside, the crew has just crushed an 80-kilometer backcountry run across the plateau; thirteen plates of elk stew and pasta have been devoured, and Stef is throwing another birch split onto the fireplace embers.
In the back room, Finn, Seb, and Enno have the electric sauna cranking at 85°C. Pieter is sitting at the timber dining table nursing a cold Mack Arctic beer when his phone buzzes with a high-priority push notification from SpaceWeatherLive:
Finn opens the heavy timber sauna door, steps out onto the snow-covered deck in nothing but wool socks, a beanie, and a steaming towel, and glances north over the frozen lake toward Hallingskarvet. He freezes. His jaw hits the deck planks.
He whips his head back inside and roars at the top of his lungs: "Lads! Dienke! EVERYONE. Put your beers down. GET OUT HERE RIGHT NOW!"
Thirteen people scramble in pure chaos: slippers flying across the hallway, down parkas thrown over bare shoulders, bare socks sinking into deep powder. You step off the deck into the crisp mountain air and look up. There is no moon, no valley glow, no cars on Route 7. The entire northern sky has detonated into an eerie, luminous lime green.
Over the next forty minutes, the curtain starts to dance. Sheets of green light ripple silently across the ionosphere 100 kilometers above the plateau, folding like sheer silk in a cosmic gale, with violet and magenta needles flashing along the upper fringes. Steam pours off everyone's shoulders into the sub-zero air. Nobody speaks. Thirteen people standing shoulder to shoulder on the roof of Norway, watching solar particles burn against Earth's magnetic shield.
Seb takes a slow sip of cold beer, wipes the frost off his chin, and smiles: "Right. Tomorrow at 10 AM, we kite under that exact same sun."

Is It Visible From Our Cabins in Early April?
Yes, with clear skies and moderate solar activity. April 3–11 is the final golden window of the Norwegian aurora season. By late April and May, high-latitude twilight never fully fades (the "white nights"), making auroras invisible against daylight. But during our expedition week, the sun sets at ~20:30 CEST, nautical twilight finishes by 21:30, and deep astronomical night reigns from 22:15 to 04:00 CEST (over 5.5 hours of pitch-black sky).
Furthermore, early April benefits from the Russell-McPherron effect: around the spring equinox, Earth’s magnetic dipole tilts in a way that maximizes magnetic reconnection between Earth’s field and the solar wind's interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Geomagnetic storms are statistically twice as frequent in March/April than in January or February!
